In 1948, a year after India gained independence from British rule, Rini Dhumal was born in the Bangladeshi city of Rongpur. She graduated from M.S. University, Baroda in 1972 with a Master of Fine Arts (Painting) degree.
She is a painter as well as a printmaker. Her career as an artist began with printmaking, and it continues to inspire her painting today. Her own personal opinion is that having an understanding of printmaking has influenced her painting and helped her develop her distinctive style. Prints have been a very common form of expression for a very long time in the history of art. She is aware that despite this, prints in India have received a stepmotherly treatment compared to painting or sculpture. As a result, she has fought to make prints more prevalent in India's art scene and is one of the most well-known individuals working to give prints their due.
In India and abroad, she has held a number of solo and group exhibitions. Some of these include the 1993 - Galerie Brita Printz, Madrid-Spain; 1992 - Sakshi Gallery, Madras, Banglore; 1992 - Gallery 7, Mumbai; 1991 - Sakshi Gallery, Madras; 1991 - Print Exhibition, Madrid-Spain; 1990 - Galerie Art & Data, Frankfurt-Germany.
Rini has been felicitated on innumerable occasions on account of her illustrious artistic career. Some of the awards/ recognitions that she has received are 1994-96 -Senoir Fellowship, Ministry of Human Resource-New Delhii; 1988 - M. S. Randhawa Award, Aifacs-New Delhi 1988 - National Award - L.K.A.; 1985 - Aifacs Award New Delhi 1983 -85-Research Fellowship, Ministry of Human Resource- New Delhi; 1977 - Group 8 Award; 1975-76 - French Govt. Scholarship ( Worked under Sir S.W. Hayter At 'Atelier 17', Paris & Krishna Reddy); 1973–75 - Govt. of India Cultural Scholarship. (Worked under Prof. K.G.Subramanyan); 1974 - Governors Gold Medal, Calcutta. ; 1972 - Chancellor's Gold Medal.
In the year 2021, renowned printmaker Rini Dhumal dies at the age of 73.
