Nikhil Biswas completed his diploma in Fine Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata. Nikhil was the founder of Calcutta Painters Group and the Society of Contemporary Artists, Kolkata, and Chitrangshu Group, Kolkata. He was a passionate artist, who worked swiftly and fervently, expressing his creativity in an idiom as innovative as it was personal. He was honored with a Gold Medal for being the best exhibit in modern art by Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, 1956. Nikhil Biswas died in 1966, at the age of 36.
