JM Subramani also referred to as JMS Mani, is a well-known artist who was born in Bangalore, Karnataka, in 1949. In 1974, he enrolled in Kuvempu Kala Sanstha Ken School of Art, where he studied under the direction of the institution's founder, RM Hadapad. Their close relationship had a significant impact on his art.
JMS Mani has experimented with expressive gestural abstraction and nature-based abstraction throughout his career. He worked extensively with the actual spaces around him, developing archetypes of the mountains, trees, structures, and landscapes of Hampi, which continued to pique his interest. Mani investigates a totally different topic and dimension in his "Mother and Child" series.
The Badami Series, which was inspired by Hadapad's birthplace of Badami, is unquestionably JMS Mani's most well-known body of work. Along with his acrylic and oil paintings, JMS Mani also experiments with sculpture, printmaking, watercolour, etching, and mixed media. His repertoire also includes impressionistic and surrealistic works.
A recipient of the Karnataka State Award in 2006 and a two-time recipient of the Lalit Kala Academy Award, JMS Mani has held solo exhibitions in India, Singapore, London, New York, Hong Kong, and Switzerland. His works are part of many important private and public collections in India and abroad. Besides being an artist, he taught for many years at his alma mater, Ken School of Art, and served as its Principal until his retirement in 2007. JMS Mani currently lives and works in Bangalore.
