Born in 1932, in Tiruvannamalai, Santhanaraj studied at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, and then went to teach at the same and finally retired in 1990 as the principal of the same institute. He taught at several other colleges and institutions around India. He participated in several exhibitions including the Commissioner for Triennale show held in Brazil, organized by Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi,1988. His posthumous exhibitions include ‘The Indigenous Line: Works of A P Santhanaraj’, Focus Art Gallery, Chennai, 2011 & ‘Celebrations 2011’, Annual Exhibition, Kumar Art Gallery, New Delhi. The artist passed away near Tambaram in May 2009.
